Digital Dictionary

The world of computers, digital technology, smartphones and the internet uses a lot of language that may be unfamiliar even to those who have used computers before. Below is a list of words that are commonly used when talking about digital technology. If there is a word that you would like to know the meaning of that is not on this list, please come and ask us.

Apps

Short for 'applications'. This is a type of program, or software, that you can download to your tablet or smartphone and it allows you do a specific function. Examples might be apps for messaging, storing photos, or making phone calls. Some apps are from companies like Tesco, Amazon or services like the NHS app.

Download

To transfer files or data stored on the internet onto your smartphone, tablet or computer. For example, you might download a picture that a friend has sent you over email, download a document to read from a trusted website or download an app from the online app store.

Tablet

A small, handheld computer with a touchscreen that can connect to the internet. Larger than a smartphone but more portable than a laptop.

Device

A collective term used to refer to smartphones, tablets, laptops and computers.
